Fairfax muses on internet paywall

I have written a number of posts about the impact that the internet is having on newsmedia and their business models. A recent one was about Rupert Murdoch’s intent to erect a ‘paywall’ around his publications. Preceding that was a more ‘philosophical’ piece on Media – but not as it was.

Now it would appear that the Fairfax Media group are thinking about going down the same path.

This is of course totally unconnected with their poor financial performance.

Now I cannot help thinking that there be some competition issues here if Fairfax and News both go down this path in a similar manner.

Further, I cannot help but think that new competitors will emerge using a different model. In addition, I suspect that many will turn for information to sites such as those of the BBC, ABC and TVNZ for example.
