Murdoch still wants to erect paywall for content

Media here in Melbourne are full of Murdoch’s intention to erect a paywall.

As might be expected The Australian, a Murdoch paper, has coverage. Clay Shirky wrote an essay a while ago on why he thinks micro-payments as a model will not work.

I am not convinced that this approach is a winner. It is not what one would call an innovative business model, rather it is a variation on an old one, that is buying a paper.

Yes, it appears to work for the WSJ and the FT, but they are papers with specialized coverage and essentially an audience that needs the content.

I doubt whether this applies to the great majority of other papers.
